• Grip: In order to capture the skating we rigged a Steadicam on a Garfield mount to an electronic 4x4 vehicle
Why did you choose to shoot on 35mm film rather than 16mm or digital?
For the director Jamie Hawkesworth there was never a question about shooting on film. He shoots his photography on film so that was the only direction we were going to go. Jamie also shoots on medium format cameras and lenses. Unfortunately IMAX wasn’t possible for us, so it was about trying to craft an image that he could recognize and feel comfortable with. After camera tests we ultimately settled on 4-perf with a 32mm lens as that felt the closest to shooting medium format for him.
You decided to use a single focal length, the 32mm, for the entire film. What motivated that choice, and what creative or narrative advantages did it bring?
The 32mm just felt right for Jamie. It felt the most like how his eye sees in medium format. I also love the rigor of just choosing one lens to work with and then using iris/depth...
