The look of this McDonald’s commercial feels very different from the brand’s usual tone. Lighting plays such a big role in this piece — can you walk us through your approach and how you balanced the natural and artificial elements on set?

We first reduced the ambient light in the room by putting ND.6 on the windows.

We added heavy wood venetian blinds to the windows.

We then pushed hard light from outdoors using an Arrimax 18k on a cherry picker, which was strong enough to come through the dark windows.

We then extended the hard light indoors with two 1.2k Nanlux Evokes.

For our keylight, we created a hard ‘Skyfall’ slash with a Dedo LED7 with a projector lens, shaped it with the cutters, and then softened this with with a S60 Skypanel with a snapbag.
For this project you used a lens set from ARRI Rental that we hadn’t heard much about — the ARRI Hero Looks. Can you tell us a bit about these lenses and why you chose them?
We used the Arri Hero ‘Look’ lenses alongside Cooke S2s, because we wanted a ‘Petzval’ look to heighten moments in the advert – to grab the viewer. What’s unique about this set, is they have a smooth 3rd ring, for tuning the look. I’ve never seen this before. It means the ‘0’ position gives a Petzval curvature, but the...
