Can you tell us about the visual references for this project, and how your conversations with the director developed around them?
We decided with the director during pre-production to avoid using references, it was a challenge to create something new, and also a necessity of working in limited conditions where the locations and textures we found during scouting dictated a lot. The main thing we agreed on was that the imagery shouldn’t resemble social advertising. It had to look like a picture through a child’s eyes, bright, rich, and at times fairy-tale-like.
